Sexual Health Classes 7-12th grade
Middle and high school level classroom education that aligns with the California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA). Lessons are engaging, medically-accurate, up-to-date, objective, and inclusive. Middle school and high school programs address the same CHYA-required content, but are delivered in age-appropriate ways.
Schedule: 8 - 10 hours total, split into 45 minute - 2 hour long class sessions.
Curricula: Lessons are adapted from multiple evidence-informed and evidence-based curricula, including 3Rs (Advocates for Youth), Be Real. Be Ready. (Adolescent Health Working Group), and Making Proud Choices! (ETR).
Puberty Classes 5-6th grade
Upper elementary level "growth, developement and sexual health" classroom education that aligns with California's Health Education Framework, 5th grade content standards, and the criteria of the California Healthy Youth Act. Lessons are engaging, medically-accurate, up-to-date, objective, and inclusive.
Schedule: 7 - 8 hours total, comprised of 45 minute - 2 hour long class sessions.
Curricula: Lessons are primarily adapted from 3Rs by Advocates for Youth, an evidence-informed curriculum.
Small Group Workshops All ages
Presentations/workshops for small groups of youth meeting at organizations, after-school programs, school clubs, and homes. Common topics for past small groups include puberty, menstruation, communication skills, body image, safer sex basics, and healthy relationships.
Small group activities can usually dive deeper into topics, and involve more discussion and self-reflection. Art, theater-games, team-building games, and/or nature walks can all be incorporated.
I can create and distribute "goodie bags"/"kits" for participants containing menstruation and hygiene supplies, safer sex supplies, informational brochures, and/or treats like stickers or candy.
Personalized Lessons
Education on specific topics, as identified by individuals, or by caregivers, parents, or legal guardians of individuals in need. Personalized education sessions can review, replicate, deepen, or move beyond classroom-based sex ed. Content and learning modalities (auditory, visual, kinesthetic, tactile) are customized to best fit the individual. This customization requires a conversation about the individual's needs and learning style a few weeks prior to the education session.
I have training and experience working one-on-one with youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and most (not all) of my past personalized education sessions have been with individuals from this population.
Special Note for RCRC Clients!
I am now a vendor of the Redwood Coast Regional Center, serving clients with ID/DD and autism throughout Humboldt, Del Norte, Mendocino, and Lake Counties. Contact your RCRC Service Coordinator ASAP to get on a waitlist for individualized classes (online or in-person) or a small group class online.
Staff & Professional Training
Updates or introductions to a wide variety of sexuality topics for service providers. Trainings are customizable, engaging, utilize multiple learning modalities, packed full of resources for continued learning and to fit varying levels of prior experience with the topics. I am adaptable to the inconsistencies in internet connectivity in our rural region, and can lead trainings with zero to high levels of tech interaction.
Past staff trainings have included:
- "Sexuality and Disabilities" for behavioral therapists and direct service providers (adaptation of Elevatus Training staff training)
- Be Real. Be Ready Curriculum Facilitator Training for educators and health workers
- Sexual Health Educator Training Program, In-Person Required Modules: "STD/HIV Review", "California Healthy Youth Act", "Minor Consent and Confidentiality", "Contraceptive Methods" for community and classroom educators, and school administrators
- "Communication with Teens About Sensitive Topics" for afterschool program staff
- "Safer Sex 101 & Healthcare Referrals" for youth shelter and drop-in center staff, foster care and transition-age-youth service providers, and adult recovery program staff
Consultation for Professionals
Sex Ed & Puberty Ed: I provide one-on-one consultation for teachers and administrators. Consultations have included trouble-shooting problems in school-based sex ed programs, helping teachers craft answers to student anonymous questions, finding free and paid resources, and providing curricula recommendations. I collaborate and communicate with other providers of sexual health education, and actively participate in the Humboldt County Sexual Health Task Force. I would love to share my knowledge with other professionals to benefit the community goal of increasing and improving sexual health education in our region.
Peer Education: I would love to help others set up new peer education programs or trouble-shoot current ones. Peer education programs are effective forms of health education if they are planned and implemented carefully. I have over 15 years of experience with nearly all aspects of peer edcuation programs, including as a youth participant, researching, designing, grant-writing, facilitating, and evaluating such programs. The programs I've been involved with have included youth conflict mediation, youth educational theater, and youth and adult peer sexual health education.

What people say
"As an expert in the field of Autism Forensics, who has witnessed time after time the unfortunate effects of a lack of sexuality education or sexuality education that is designed for the neurotypical population, I am so grateful for the work of Kate Jamison- Alward.
She presents sexuality education that is truly geared toward people with learning support needs in a straight-forward manner to make the content accessible.
Kate promotes inclusion, equity and access but most importantly - the same human dignity that EVERY PERSON should be afforded to live their lives and love who they love in a safe and caring manner. I wish there were more Kates in this world."

"We at Eel River Community School have had the great privilege to have Kate teach Sex Ed over the past several years. During that time she has demonstrated a mastery of the subject matter but more importantly she develops a easy, yet professional rapport with the students.
Now that Kate has had the fortune to create her own curriculum and grow into her presentations without following other constrictions, she has only shone even more. Any school that has the chance to have Kate present will be grateful for the opportunity."
